Spenco sandals make podiatrists cheer but older types of sandals such as thongs make these foot experts imagine a room full of patients with foot issues who are in a lot of pain.
Why do podiatrists cringe at the thought that their patients are wearing thong sandals or flip flops? It’s because traditionally, these ‘shoes’ were not even shoes at all. They appeared to be nothing more than a piece of foam of some sort with a big toe divider that attached to a strap that connected to the middle of the foot.
This old type of sandal gave no support whatsoever for the foot. They may have been okay to wear at the gym when you go to shower and don’t want to pick up any type of athlete’s foot fungus in the shower. They may have been okay for you when you come out of a refreshing moonlit dip in the swimming pool and don’t have far to walk to your hotel room.
But if you’re walking for longer than about an hour without support – such as those who were walking around in them all day long, that’s when the podiatrists got really worried. Without support on your foot, the muscles begin to contract for longer than what they can handle. Foot muscle fatigue sets in, and soon, collapse of the natural arch of the foot results. This can lead to all sorts of foot disorders, including bunions, calluses, plantar fasciitis, corns, and hammer toes – all disorders that don’t make your feet look too pretty. Consequently, you end up never wanting to wear another sandal again because you’re embarrassed about your feet!
Spenco sandals are a great innovation from the past thong sandal. Spenco sandals look like thong sandals but they are a far cry from a flat slab of walking material with no support. They have orthotic arch supports in them, fully ready to support your feet for walking.
Not only is there arch support, but there’s also heel support. When you walk, your heel should be solid without any waivering to either side. If shoe design makes a slight heel cup to hold the heel, then the heel will be solid. If the heel moves to one side, the foot is in pronation or supination, and an excess of either one of these will cause new foot problems.
Spenco sandals have orthotic arch supports, heel support, and superior impact cushioning so you could walk a mile or two on the beach during the day and another few miles at night and not have to worry about your feet aching.
