Some time ago I got an email from the Sof Sole Performance Insoles. They are makers of quality insoles and some of other related items. They asked if I would like to try a pair of their new Fit insoles and do a review for my blog. I was curious about them and said go ahead and send them to me. So many miles and a couple of races later here is the review.
I have to admit that I have never used insoles or seen a lot of value in them. Growing up I think I did some Oder Eater insoles but nothing else. The mindset that I had was that either they were a pricey add on for the shoe stores to make more money or that they were for people that had really bad arches or feet and medically needed them. I just have not seen the reason or value that insoles could provide especially for the cost of them. When my wife recently bought some running shoes she ended up getting insoles as well. I thought that with her current foot pain maybe they would help so did not say anything about their purchase. So for this review of the Sof Sole Fit Insoles I really wasn’t expecting much. I thought an insole was an insole and this review would be stating that fact. But these insoles have changed my mind about insoles in general.
I got the insoles one evening in the mail and liked the colorful design to them. I had looked online to see which foot type I should order. The cool part of these insoles is that many running stores now have a Sof Sole machine to help you identify what type to buy. Since I was not near one of those stores I looked online and looked at a couple of videos they currently have and choose the Foot Arch Sizing Video by Sof Sole. I determined that the Neutral ones were what would work best for me. I looked in the packaging and was surprised that no instructions were there to help me properly trim the insoles to the pair of shoes that I had chosen for the test.
.
I picked an older pair of Brooks that for some reason never felt exactly right. So my thinking was let’s see if these new insoles will help to change that. I pulled the Brooks insoles out of the shoes and was surprised by what I saw. I guess most shoe insoles are the same so this is not a knock on Brooks. The insoles really are not a lot of anything. Some thin form that really has little support and or cushioning. The Fit insoles appeared to have more material, an arch and heel portion built up and overall more sturdy. Even with the type I selected (Neutral) I was surprised by the difference between the two insoles. I placed the new insoles on top of the old ones, aligning the inside edges and used a marker to draw where the extra was at. I cut the Sof Sole FIT Insoles to fit in this fashion and then placed them in the shoes. I was ready to start the test.
.
The first time I put them on was for a 4 mile run around the neighborhood. They started a little stiff but not bad. The insoles seemed to fit in the shoes well and I guess I had trimmed them to size in an appropriate manner. My heel did fill more in place and did not seem to slide as much in the new Fits. After about a mile the stiffness was out and soon after that I forgot they were there. OK, they did feel better than the original Brook insoles so I did notice the fact that my foot felt better compared to what was in the shoes before. At the end of the run I realized that the shoes that I have avoided for a while now felt more like I thought they should.
I have run some longer distances, a 10k race and even a half marathon in these shoes since I got them. Overall the Sof Sole Fit insoles have made a difference in what I now expect my foot to feel like during a run. I have gotten use to the support and extra cushioning of the insole and the return that they provide. At this point this old pair of Brooks shoes now is my favorite pair of shoes and are my go to shoe s for races. I doubt if they will be the shoes I end up doing the marathon in due to the mileage on them but maybe a second pair of these Fit insoles are in my future so I can get them ready for the marathon.
So I would say try the new Sof Sole Fit insoles or any of their other insoles whichever seem to accommodate your needs. For me the Fit insoles are a little pricey (retails $40) but for what I get from them it is worth the cost. The only suggestion I have is that some trimming guidance either in the box or online should be provided to the buyer. Sure most people would figure it out but it would have been nice to have some instructions so that I didn’t mess up an expensive pair of insoles by mis trimming them. Otherwise I am very pleased with these Fit insoles and look to have them as a part of my running gear for some time.
