Now let’s be honest; get out your shoes from the closet and take a look at them. Is it time for a shoe makeover?
There are two things to consider when determining whether a shoe makeover is needed or not; what’s the status of the outside of the shoe and what’s the status of the insole on the inside of the shoe.
If the shoe sole is worn so much that you can visibly see holes or one side of the sole is run down an eighth of an inch or more, you need new shoes. The status of the insoles won’t even matter. It’s never smart to frost a cake if the cake itself is collapsing.
If your shoes pass the outside test and are still in good condition, it’s time to test the insole on the inside. Your final goal is to determine whether you need replacement insoles or not.
Here’s a list of questions to ask yourself about each pair of insoles:
1. Have you had the insoles for longer than a year and do you wear these shoes regularly? If so, you need replacement insoles.
2. How do your feet feel when you slip into the shoes? If the answer is that they feel tired or you have pain, you need replacement insoles.
3. What do the insoles look like? Are they dirty? If so, remove them from the shoes and wash them. If they come clean enough and pass the two previous questions, keep them and insert them back in the shoes after they dry thoroughly.
Sometimes you’ll know right away that its time for replacement insoles. For example, if you have boating shoes that get wet every time you wear them, it’s a good idea to insert replacement insoles in the boat shoes, at least, every year. Your feet will feel great with new replacement insoles, plus there’s a psychological lift that occurs when you have new ones in the shoes. Now you need to determine whether you are looking for flat insoles made of foam, cotton, or leather and/or cushioned arch insoles or arch supports?
