A lot of the time, finding out about how a company got started gives you a clue as to what that company is all about. Would you like to know how Superfeet insoles got started?
Superfeet insoles got started way back in 1962. That was when their founder, Dennis Brown had the opportunity to meet someone who changed his life – Dr. Bill Pozer at the California College of Podiatric Medicine. At that time, the whole field of custom orthotics was just beginning.
For the next few years, Dennis took on a project that very few would ever tackle – making orthotics for ski boots of those who had already had an amputation. Each pair of orthotics had to be customized (custom orthotics) for the individual. This type of project required a lot of intellectual thought and learning about how shoes should fit and how the foot should function. It was perfect for an inventor at heart though!
Dennis ended up purchasing a laboratory where he could cast moulds of feet, create sample orthotic products and the more he created, the better he got at the process. In 1965, he partnered up with Chris who he knew from outdoor activities.
With two minds better than one, this work team started challenging the current paradigms in sports medicine and biomechanics of the foot. By the mid 1970s, advanced thinkers of the time believed that top-of-the-line elite athletes needed the best fit of their boots (especially for winter sports). By 1977, the two were ready to launch Superfeet insoles as an in-shoe system that was solidly based on medical knowledge. And their goal was to help people in a way that everyone could afford Superfeet insoles.
But at the end of the 1970s, very few people knew or understood about orthoticinsoles. They had to create a training program for staff. And then an amazing breakthrough occurred with Superfeet insoles. They developed a way for boot fitters to customize orthotics for the boot wearers in little over a half hour. This cut off weeks from the normal process.
And then Dennis Brown ended up working with a hockey boot manufacturer, which made boot wearers’ feet jump with delight once they slipped into boots customized with superfeet insoles.
In 1980, Superfeet became the very first company to create an insole that was biomechanically-engineered. This one was called Superfeet Green insole – and it still is a top seller in the industry.
There’s a lot more to the Superfeet insoles story, but you can easily see that the company has a solid foundation of science and heart and a pioneering spirit that has lasted up until the present day.
